Abstract

The PL/I computer code HEAT-INV solves numerically the inverse problem associated with the simulation of the heat transfer in a lake, i.e. the problem of determining the effective heat diffusion coefficient starting from the experimental knowledge of the water temperature. The general concepts underlying the numerical procedure are presented. Descriptions of the data required for the application of the code to a lake and of the results are given. Finally, the code is applied to the case of Lake Varese, where a measurement campaign has been carried out during the lake stratification period of 1987.
