Abstract

High pressure gas energy volumes are usually measured with orifice plate systems according to ISO 5167. The basis of the calculation of the discharge coefficient has been a data set of mainly small orifices, calibrated with water. This programme aimed to generate a new data set appropriate to the larger diameter and higher Reynolds number involved in high pressure gas custody transfer, as part of the revision of the ISO 5167 flow-metering standard. The Gasunie "Bernouilli Laboratorium" facility at Westerbark was used for this calibration. Particular care was taken to ensure that the uncertainty in the data was the lowest possible. Apart from the flow measurements, equipment calibrated to international standards was used to measure differential pressure, temperature, absolute pressure and time. The gas density was calculated using the monthly averaged gas composition, analysed off-line by gas chromatography. The effect of orifice plate surface roughess requires further consideration. The final uncertainty in the data produced with the 600mm orifice meter run is 0.28%.
