Abstract

A collaborative magnetotelluric survey was undertaken in 1986 on the island of Milos, Greece, where there is a known geothermal reservoir. The results of the University of Edinburgh Group, involving 37 soundings, are reported. Maps of principal impedance azimuths and induction arrows were in good agreement with the 3D modelling study of Weidelt. For sites close to the boreholes M1 and M2, electrical resistivity models were compared with the borehole data. The Dawes and the Parker D(+) algorithms were most successful in revealing an interface at the reservoir depth. Contoured resistivity sections derived from the Bostick transformation confirm that areas of low resistivity coincide with regions of high thermal gradient. Contour maps of the depths to and the conductances of certain layers derived from the D+ model show good correlation with the thermal gradient and with the two directions of faulting. Very low resistivities detected at shallow depths at the centre of the field indicate the presence of fluid-filled cracks.
