Abstract

Turbowinds NV, in cooperation with the Department of Fluid Mechanics of the Brussels University VUB have developed a wind-energy system at the polder of Willebroek, Belgium. The installation is composed of a Turbowinds V8 windturbine coupled with two modified transfer pumps and equipped with measuring apparatus. Performance measured on site is generally in excess of its predicted output curve and its centrifugally actuated blade pitch system has provided an effective safety control. This project has been an economic success and demonstrates the possibility of future viable projects on sites where there is no electrical grid. Installations are expected to be particularly viable in developing countries for irrigation purposes or in areas with water problems.
