THE INHERENT FUEL PROPERTY OF FOUNDRY COKE - A STUDY OF AN EVALUATION METHODOLOGY AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF CONDITIONING THIS PROPERTY DURING COKE PRODUCTION
Foundry coke is used in cylindrical cupola furnaces, into which burden materials and fuel are introduced from above. Combustion is fuelled with air blown through nozzles located radially in the tuyeres whilst melted products are collected and tapped from the crucible. Regardless of the construction and technological characteristics of the various cupolas and the operating conditions, the coke not only acts as a source of energy but also has various other functions which make it irreplaceable by other fuels: it supports the weight of the metallic burden and acts as a reducing agent and fuel, supplying carbon to the metal when the initial quantity of carbon is lower than the value required in the molten cast iron. High percentages of steel can thus be used in the burden. The object of this research project is to identify the characteristics of coke which influence its tendency to release carbon into the metallic burden. The carburation due to the contact of the liquid metal with high temperature coke occurs when drops of molten metal fall on incandescent coke, as long as the metal itself is in contact with the coke in the crucible.
