TEST OF A MEASURING PROCEDURE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CHARGE MATERIALS IN THE BLAST FURNACE USING THE VARIABLE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY
By measuring the resistance between electrodes protruding into the blast furnace, Thyssen Stahl AG, in co-operation with the RWTH Aachen, seeks to obtain information on the conditions and processes inside the furnace, especially close to the furnace linings. There is very little change in the electrical conductivity of the coke layers descending through the blast furnace to the tuyere level. The electrical conductivity of the burden, however, changes by many powers of ten during the reduction. The measurement equipment has been tested successfully both a few meters under the stock line and in lower zones. It is equipped with automatic checking devices. Measured values, descent rates of layer thicknesses are shown continuously on the display screen. The two latter values are stored on hard disks. On the basis of the measurements, sticking can be discovered early, so that greater disturbances can be avoided by taking appropriate action. With the extensive experience gained, the measuring equipment has become extremely reliable. Electrodes' insulation has not failed since the last improvements carried out several years ago.
