Abstract

Despite intensive herbicide usage, many problems with weeds remain to be solved; apart from toxico-ecological aspects (very serious water pollution), a high number of new weed species have prevailed. The development of alternative safety methods and means of weed control is urgent. The EC experts' meeting held in 1986 in Stuttgart suggested that increased attention be focused on herbicide-resistant weeds, in comparison with new selective products and new growth-regulating chemicals.
