LES ESPECES LIGNEUSES A USAGES MULTIPLES DES ZONES MEDITERRANEENNES. RECUEIL DES COMMUNICATIONS, SARAGOSSE (ESPAGNE), 25-26, SEPT., 1987Financé au titre de: FP1-AGRIRES 3C
The problems in forestry in the Mediterranean region are of a specific character and justify a unique approach. In general, the production of wood in terms of quantity or revenue is not important. This is the current situation in the regions outside the more humid mountainous zones. These forests are also often destroyed by fires, which discourages long term development. Apart from wood, this open woody land provides other products such as woody or green fodder as well as cork. In view of the terrain, which is often uneven and of wild character, and the sudden violent variations in climate (rain and wind), the vegetation plays a particularly important role in protecting soil against erosion, in limiting floods and in the provision of groundwater sources.
