Abstract

The study presents a complete synthesis of the available data that can contribute to the knowledge of the low enthalpy geothermal potential of the subsurface section from ground level to a depth of 1000 m in the Po Valley. The study area in Northern Italy covers a surface of about 46,000km2, being defined by the alluvial plain of the river Po and its north-eastern extension into the Veneto Plain. The conventional land boundary of the study area has been taken as the plain-mountain boundary; to the east as the coastline of the Adriatic Sea. The feasibility study is intended to define the preferential areas of potential interest, to be followed by a second phase consisting of an additional selection of areas, made on socio-economic grounds, and complemented by more detailed investigations. The areas selected in this first phase are those where the best combinations of favourable water temperature, aquifer net pay thickness and permeability are found. The methodology followed in the definition of these parameters is given in detail.
