Abstract

Horizontal strata bunkers (HSBs) offer a combination of low cost and high capacity. The objective is to develop a package for the automation of the more common types of HSB, leading to their integration with the colliery coal clearance system, a reduction in manpower and an increase in efficiency. Control of coal flow in and out of the bunker was achieved by having the inbye trunk conveyor delivering onto a metering conveyor (hopper capacity about 10 tonnes) with an overspill arrangement at the rear. A programmable control unit was developed to monitor and control the bunker. In operation the bunker will automatically start if either the inbye or outbye trunk conveyors are running. Depending on information from probes, the bunker outfeed will start-up and stop as required and the loading machine and plough will move to the appropriate part of the coal pile and bunker.
