Abstract

The purpose of the present report is to give a comprehensive description of the stochastic assessment conducted by the JRC in the context of deep ocean repositories of high level radioactive waste. It begins with a general introduction to assessment methodology and uncertainty analysis and goes on to describe the calculation tools employed in performing this analysis. After outlining the way in which the LISA code was adapted to the present assessment through interfacing with appropriate submodels, the waste source term, comprising the waste package and radionuclide inventory, is described. The mathematical background of the submodels employed and their interpretation into the form required by LISA are then discussed. This is followed by the presentation of a set of preliminary results obtained, which were used to monitor the performance of the whole model structure and to make improvements and simplifications to the original specifications for the assessment. The main batch of results, including sensitivity analyses, are then presented.
