Abstract

The report describes the work to be carried out under research contracts concluded before the end of 1987 as well as the actual implementation of the radioactive waste management and storage programme. This covers waste management studies and the construction and/or operation of underground experimental facilities. In task 1, contractors assess different management routes for reactor waste and the reprocessing direct disposal comparison. Task 2 concerns treatment and conditioning technologies for waste from light water reactors, reprocessing plants, plutonium fuel fabrication plants and research centres, and the optimisation of waste management at source. Task 3 involves the testing and evaluation of both medium and high active conditioned waste and the qualification of engineered barriers. Task No. 4, shallow land burial and geological disposal studies, is carried out by the working groups: GEOPROS, ROCMEC, COSA, B&S, MIRAGE, COCO, CHEMVAL and NAWG. Task No. 5 relates to the PAGIS and PACOMA projects and task No. 6 concerns the joint elaboration of policies and the determination of relevant criteria.
