HIGH TECHNOLOGY EUROPE STRATEGIC ISSUES FOR GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS
This report considers the key issues for strategic success in a world where European enterprises increasingly have to face global competition. Some efficient enterprises in high-tech sectors have created long-term competitive advantage for themselves by developing strategic capabilities based on financial, organisational, management and resource strengths. Where European enterprises are losing ground to their American and Japanese competitors, this is often due to compartmentalised markets and lack of large-scale opportunities, whereas their competitors have internationalised from a continental base. In the future, European firms may be forced to occupy a peripheral position in major international alliances and markets. Europe must also make better use of its strong R+D potential, by increased cooperation between industry and universities, across national boundaries. The cost and complexity of technical progress in high-tech sectors now exceeds the capacity of even the largest individual enterprise. International competition is developing faster than European integration and measures must be taken to improve the situation.
