GEOPROSPECTING - DEVELOPMENT OF MODELLING VOLUME 4 PRESENT DAY EQUIVALENTS OF PAST CLIMATES - BASES FOR MODELLING BIOCLIMATES
The purpose of this work is to find "present day equivalents of past climates", in order to characterise each of the major continental climates (temperature, humidity, weathering, erosion) which prevailed in Europe during Pliocene Quaternary times. Palynology is the most suitable method of reconstituting past climates, due to the evidence which it provides about surrounding vegetation. The experiment in bioclimatic modelling is carried out by analysing present day vegetation and its climatological distribution. For this purpose a phytoclimatic index is used, which takes account of annual precipitation, extreme monthly temperatures and aridity through the rainfall in the driest quarter. A climagram has been constructed, with the climatic index (Qn) on the x axis and an expression approximating to the mean annual temperature (M + m/2) on the y axis. This graph determines the position of any plant communities and, by analogy, locates them climatically. Furthermore, computerised digital control of these parameters makes it possible to characterise and locate past climates by plotting transfer functions. Moreover when the various external geodynamic parameters have been entered on the climagram, it is easy to estimate the weathering, erosion, hydrology values etc.
