WEATHER RADAR NETWORKING
The COST 73 Project aims at setting up a weather radar network in Western Europe that will allow quantitative and real time measurement of precipitation (rain, snow and hail). The data from the radars are sent to compositing centres in one or more of the member countries where they are merged, in order to form images of precipitations over Western Europe, and these images are combined with data from the geo-stationary satellites - Meteosat. Areas of severe turbulence and strong winds can be located and tracked, thus helping meteorologists to prepare more accurate forecasts for water management, flight assistance and other purposes. This report gives an account of the papers presented at the Seminar on Weather Radar Networking (COST Project 73) held in Brussels on 5-8 September 1989. During the six planned sessions of the seminar the following topics were discussed : - radar networking programmes, the role of reflectivity base techniques in operational radar networks; - the role of new techniques in operational radar networks, combining radar satellites and conventional meteorology data; - meteorology as well as hydrological and other applications of weather radar data.
