Abstract

Waste heat from power stations represents a source of energy which is little used at the present time. Put to judicious use, this source could produce appreciable energy savings. Individual uses of this heat have already confirmed the validity of upgrading technologies and enabled economic operating balances to be established. Before undertaking new projects in this sector, however, the time has come to learn from the experience gained, to verify the economic and energy balances and to compare the problems encountered and the solutions found. The commercial dissemination of processes of upgrading low enthalpy heat wastes is strongly restrained by the cost of basic investments that are often too high for economic practicability in a cost context of low-price energy. The present commercial successes are mainly found in the sector of protected cultures of strong added value, such as floral culture and pot plants, or in pisciculture, for species of fish the sale of which is already established on a good commercial and distribution network.
