Abstract

The aim of this project was the construction and operation of four special hay storage halls in Bavaria to produce quality hay with minimal use of conventional energy for preheating the drying air. An average increase of about 5K can be obtained by the use of solar energy (collected by solar panels in the roof) and an air intake device also in the roof space. The existing electricity system is used to drive the fan. The whole haystack area is partitioned into separately ventilated compartments. The weather risk is considerably reduced by use of these halls. A comparison between the solar air heating system and other systems using conventional energy for preheating air shows that there is no economic advantage at current oil price levels.
