NEW TECHNIQUES FOR DRILLING BLAST-HOLES
The object of the research is to improve the performance of drilling machines by using new methods and trying out the most effective cutters, bits and hammers. The research is essentially centred on drilling holes for blasting formations. In the Provence coalfield a light bolt firing tool has been tested, experiments have been carried out to perfect manual rotary drilling techniques, and a heavy bolt firing tool has been modified. In the Lorraine coalfield, use at hard headings was studied. A jumbo bolt firing tool with two arms fitted with hydraulic hammers was designed and used, with experimental bits and special bolts. Tests to perfect bits and cutters for manual rotary drilling and tests to standardise the equipment have taken place at the work area. The research does not claim to provide a single solution to all drilling problems. It aims to perfect the drilling of blast holes for bolt firing, so the conditions of use will necessarily depend on the headings and formations.
