Kurzbeschreibung

Tokamak experiments serve the purpose of the production and magnetic inclusion of hot hydrogen plasmas in a ring-shaped ignition chamber and play an important role in fusion oriented plasma physics. The surrounding magnetic fields are built up in these machines inside the plasma, partly through induced currents. The spatial distribution of these currents cannot however be controlled from the outside. The TEXTOR tokamak experiment in Julich therefore developed an optical procedure for measuring the internal field structure. This procedure was based on measurement of the Faraday effect for linear polarised laser beams. By this means, it was possible to test a number of theoretical ideas about the magnetohydrodynamic behaviour of high temperature plasmas.
