HEAT EXCHANGER R&D, A TOOL FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION - ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE NON-NUCLEAR ENERGY R&D PROGRAMME OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITYFunded under: FP1-ENNONUC 3C
The general objective of the energy conservation R&D programme is to develop techniques and technologies which enhance energy saving and decrease pollution and in addition to encourage industrial involvement in this work. This paper discusses the role of heat exchanger R&D and presents data on research projects involving their use for heat recovery in industrial situations. The objectives of the research are to improve performance of existing heat exchangers and reduce their costs, develop new models for high temperature heat recovery, tackle the problems of fouling and corrosion and to develop new concepts, including process intensification. Work on compact and plastic heat exchangers has been carried out and also research for applications in refrigeration and absorption heat pumps. Computer simulation has an important role in this work.
