Abstract

The report concerns the duty-cycling of heatpumps. Having developed a method to measure dynamic efficiency, a simple model for heatpump performance when duty-cycling is described, which takes into consideration the effect of start currents. The possible applications of duty-cycling are considered, together with related technical problems. It is concluded that it is possible to improve the coefficient of performance of a heatpump with duty-cycling by a factor of 20-30%. The heatpump is only suitable for duty-cycling if the compressor has low start losses and the refrigerant circuit has a suitably large timeconstant of above 30 sec.
