Abstract

In order to exploit the use of fine coal as a substitute for oil and gas in industrial processes, coal breakage behaviour is evaluated and several novel mills are assessed for their potential in direct-fired combustion systems. Laboratory tests show that : 1) the amount of fines produced by compression and impact depends on the total energy per unit mass applied 2) initial particle size has little, if any, effect 3) the ranking order with respect to fines produced is the same for compression and impact 4) compression requires approximately 25-30% more energy than impact. Of the conventional mills tested, vertical spindle mills give the best overall performance. The performance of impact mills varies considerably, the best being of relatively simple design. Two multi-rotor impact mills have been tested as part of a combined mill/ combustion system and both are shown to be suitable for use in direct-fired combustion of microfine coal. Two novel mills, a planetary roller and a centrifugal ball mill, are capable of producing high solids loadings in wet milling trials, making them suitable for on-line production of CWM.
