Abstract

The flameproof, thyristor-controlled 10 x 100 kVAr instantaneous reactive current compensation unit developed under the preceding project on "Improvement of Power Mains Technology by Means of Instantaneous Reactive Current Compensation" was incorporated in a 500 V underground mains. The unit has been devised for various purposes: discharging the underground power supply network from reactive current; reducing voltage drops as well as losses in cables and conductors; enhancing the capacity factor and torque of asynchronous motors in the starting phase. Underground trials reconfirmed, by and large, the results of surface tests. Surge voltages during operation and harmonic vibrations in the mains, however, caused disturbances requiring both the incorporation of thyristors providing a higher peak blocking voltage as well as some revision of controls. The vacuum switching technology selected has meanwhile been advanced to maturity; it is considered reliable and suitable for solving any and all switching jobs typical of the mining industry. The erasing concept ensures high availability and, as such, safety of supply, savings in underground space and - purposefully equipped - operation in mains up to 10 kV.
