Abstract

The properties of charge and burden materials and the operating parameters of the coke oven batteries and No.5 blast furnace have been monitored for eighteen months at ILVA's Taranto steel works. Analysis of the data collected has not revealed any effect on the blast furnace performance as a result of variation in coke quality, whose CSR in test results, however, have always remained in the high range of values. To acquire information on the behaviour of this parameter in the lower range of values, process data from No.3 blast furnace were analysed covering the July-August 1986 period when there had been marked variations in the CSR test results. It has been found that the minimum value below which blast furnace performance is adversely affected is CSR approx. 53%.
