Abstract

Acid pollutants and their precursors (SO(2) and NO(x)) are transported in solute and particulate form by rain, snow, fog, cloud droplets and wind. Acid deposition includes both wet and dry atmospheric deposition. The effects on the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are considered not only in relation to the lowering of pH values, but also other factors affecting the community and the physical environment, such as trace metals, alkalinity and ozone. Biological indicators, study methods and ways to prevent or reduce damage are considered.
