Abstract

Different types of sensors are described. The sensing systems are classified according to their operating principles. For the non-potentiometric sensors the responses to different chemical species consist of a variation of electrical parameters (conductance, current, capacitance) corresponding to physical or physicochemical processes, such as adsorption, chemisorption and chemical reactions. For the potentiometric sensors, which actually are solid electrolyte galvanic cells, the response is represented by an electromotive force. Some examples of the most commonly used sensors are provided. Modern systems of checking surfaces (for instance, Auger spectroscopy) have to be regarded as essential tools for developing new sensors with improved sensitivity, specificity and rate of response.
