IMPROVED HOT LEVELLER FOR STEEL PLATES
Traditional hot levellers show their limitations when confronted with the higher strength of new plate steel grades, higher production throughput of the mill, new products and refined levelling methods. This research programme involves an industrial hot leveller with an added hydraulic setting regulation, which can - set the rolls during levelling in order to get the higher deformations needed by high strength plates - minimise the remaining strains by a wedge setting of the rolls - level plates with variable longitudinal thickness - adapt the setting during levelling. An optimal strategy of levelling has been developed, based on experience of the operators and results of theoretical researches. Ergonomy of the control equipment and the interface between operator, machine and computer are taken into account. The hierarchical process control method developed for the leveller automation enables a progressive transfer of knowledge and responsibility from the operator to the control system.
