INFERENCE ENGINE BUILDING & A CASE STUDYFunded under: JRC-ADVMAT 1C
This paper aims at describing a unique application of artificial intelligence (AI) methodology to structural engineering, i.e. the use of AI techniques in managing the various problem solving methods available to an operator. (An operator in this case refers to a person who is charged with the responsibility of inspection and maintenance of a structure.) The BRITE (Basic Research in Industrial Technology for Europe) project is described, although only offshore structures are discussed. An account of the role of artificial intelligence in the project is given and the design of the expert system RAMINO is described. Some relevant experience gained in a very successful ESPRIT project is used as a basis for discussions and comparison.
