ARTIC : A KNOWLEDGE ENGINEERING APPROACH TO DAMAGE ASSESSMENT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE PRESSURIZED COMPONENTSFunded under: JRC-ADVMAT 1C
The assessment of the residual life time of steam headers, which have normally been operated over 100.000 hours, is very critical because of both their intrinsic worth and the extremely high outage costs they induce. Moreover, these components require an extremely flexible procedure, as they can be characterised by a wide range of geometrical and mechanical configurations, and they perform in many different operational environments. ARTIC is a research project for the Assessment of Residual life TIme for Creep damaged components. It aims at building an intelligent system for dealing with the assessment of steam headers. The paper describes how the complexity of the problem can be handled. The knowledge engineering approach to damage assessment of high temperature pressurised components is addressed. The "side effects" of this approach to the problem domain mainly concern the methodology adopted to provide a structure to the domain information and the treatment of uncertainty and imperfection of the data. The envisaged representation and the results achieved are presented.
