Kurzbeschreibung

The significance of the plasma-wall interaction in fusion research lies in the heat produced by a fusion plasma across the components of the ignition chamber's wall. The lifespan of these components (for example, as a result of strong erosion) must be as long as possible, and the type and number of materials that are thereby set free on the wall surface must not exceed narrow limits. TEXTOR, the testing installation at Juelich, aims at solving these problems. During its brief period of operation, this installation gave rise to many important contributions to the understanding of these processes and their control. The in-situ plasma-chemical layering of the metallic wall with a protective carbon layer proved to be especially successful.
