PREPROGRAMMED COIL CURRENT WAVEFORMS FOR SHAPE CONTROL ON PBX-M
Using the FBT code, the evolution of a PBX-M discharge is simulated by a series of ideal MHD equilibria with prescribed shape, plasma current and other global parameters. FBT computes optimised coil currents as well as simulated flux loop measurements for each equilibrium. Coil current and control waveforms can then be obtained by choosing an appropriate time scale for the plasma current rampup. Preliminary experiments, using the calculated coil currents as preprogrammed waveforms, were performed on PBX-M. If the experimental plasma parameters were close to the ones assumed in the simulation, the coil current corrections computed by the PBX-M shape control system were small, thus keeping the system within the linear domain. Using this method of coil current preprogramming should make it easier to establish discharges with new sets of plasma parameters, such as high beta(p) configurations.
