Abstract

A European intercomparison of ultrasonic power measurements was carried out. Stage 1, involving a 4 MHz transducer, is described. The quantity of interest is the electroacoustic radiation conductance G of the transducer when radiating into water at room temperature. The final G result, averaged from the measurements of all participants, is 45.64 microS. The deviations from this mean value are as follows : NPL: -3.4%; TNO: +0.2%; PTB: +3.2%. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed, and proposals for future action are made. The 4 MHz transducer is well-suited for the purposes of a power standard. There have been no indications of a temporal change since the transducer construction in 1984, and the radiation conductance is independent of the signal amplitude within the limits of repeatability.
