Abstract

The objective of this research programme was to investigate the potential for lowering fuel consumption and unburned hydrocarbon emission of gasoline engines by enhancing the final phase of combustion of the Otto cycle. To this end specific tools (theories, diagnostics, experimental setups) were developed and applied in engine combustion studies. Single cylinder engine tests were carried out to validate predicted potentials for improvements, with possible applications in mind. These engine experiments indicate that the final phase of combustion could indeed be enhanced to give a better fuel efficiency, for example, by raising the turbulence level in the combustion chamber appropriately. Also, if the final phase combustion is enhanced, the emission of unburned hydrocarbons could be lowered below 50%.
