Abstract

Drinking water quality standards in Member States and outside the Community are compared with those set in Annex I of EC Directive 80/778. The grounds for determining drinking water quality standards considered by Canada, USA and WHO are summarised. A case-by-case analysis for parameters listed in Annex I of the Directive is presented. These are organoleptic and physico-chemical parameters, parameters concerning substances undesirable in excessive amounts and parameters concerning toxic substances. Additional parameters and specific substances considered in countries outside the Community are also discussed. A few recommendations are made. They concern the regulation of contaminants currently grouped under single parameters, the addition of new parameters to the EC Directive and the development of better definitions for some parameters.
