STAINLESS STEELS FOR WEAR RESISTING APPLICATIONS
The report provides information on the abrasive and erosive wear resistance of a wide range of austenitic, ferritic, duplex and martensitic stainless steels in the wrought, cast and weld deposited conditions. Performance against a range of minerals typical of those handled in mining, iron and steelmaking plants is reported. These data provide a useful addition to the spectrum of properties which need to be considered in selecting materials for specific applications. Attention is drawn to the attractive combinations of corrosion and wear resistance provided by the air hardened martensite steels, which are currently finding applications where the maintenance of free flow is important. The second part of the report explores potential avenues of product development aimed ultimately at the provision of better, or cheaper wear resistant stainless steels. The approaches studied include the use of metastable steels to encourage transformation to martensite during the wearing process, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP), and dispersion of hard particles in a soft corrosion resistant matrix. Of these, the latter approach appears to offer the best potential for further development.
