Abstract

Instrumentation systems providing drill guidance information adequate to allow the drilling of long in-seam holes in coal are studied. The design, construction and performance of the SEI experimental Mark 1 probe and the commercially available production Mark 2 probe system are described and assessed as tools for the guidance of drills. These probes are both pump-in survey probes, relying primarily upon scintillation counter detection of natural gamma radiation for vertical in-seam guidance and upon 1-g accelerometers (inclinometers) for geometrical guidance in the vertical plane. Experimental systems for measurement-while-drilling are assessed and factors relevant to the design of a production system discussed. Additional sensing needs are identified and various possible methods of meeting these needs are studied to varying extent, without reaching any conclusions. The SEI Mark 1 system is seen to provide a basically sufficient set of data for in-seam guidance, but inclinometer ranges are inadequate. The SEI Mark 2 system has a significantly improved sensor suite. The inclinometer ranges are sufficient for all likely horizontal applications.
