Abstract

The first paper concerns the fuelling of magnetically confined fusion reactor plasmas. The three basic methods are at present gas puffing, neutral injection and pellet injection. Their role in the development of future reactors is discussed particularly with regard to the use of tritium. The second paper describes the pumping of tritiated plasma exhaust and reports details of tests carried out at JET on a cryogenic diffusion pump. The characteristics demonstrated by this pump lead to a straightforward engineering design of a fusion reactor forevacuum system. The third paper reviews twenty-one purification methods for impurity separation in plasma exhaust, summarising their main operational characteristics as well as their main advantages and disadvantages. No simple process meets all the requirements of the fuel cycle on its own. A few examples of a complete purification process are included.
