MANAGEMENT OF TRITIUM-CONTAMINATED WASTES A SURVEY OF ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS
The European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory (ETHEL) was commissioned to develop experimentally operational and environmental safety aspects relating to the tritium technology in fusion. Part of the experimental activities to be performed in ETHEL will be devoted to laboratory research on tritiated waste management. Since all experimental activities will themselves generate tritiated waste, current strategies and practices for the routine management of these wastes need to be defined. To attain this target, adequate background information is required. The aim of this report is to provide this information through an exhaustive literature survey. It assesses tritiated waste management options so far investigated or currently applied in Europe, USA and Canada. Special attention is given to the tritium leach tests in water, the results of which enable a direct assessment of the tritium retention efficiency of the various waste immobilisation options. The conclusions of the overall assessment are presented. They provide valuable information for defining the subjects and areas of research on tritiated waste management to be performed in ETHEL.
