Abstract

These two papers concern the physics and the technical aspects of a high power 140 GHz collective scattering diagnostic to measure fast ion and alpha particle distributions in JET. Four important effects influence the performance of the diagnostic : refractive index, density fluctuations, emission by the plasma and plasma absorption and re-emission. Illustrative examples of calculated spectra are presented. Technical details of key components of the system are given. These include a high power (400 kW, CW) gyrotron, a high frequency anode modulator, a transmission system, and a heterodyne detection system for analysis of the scattered radiation, as well as in-vessel components to allow a spatial scan. The expected system performance for analysis of fast ion populations is discussed.
