Abstract

The report makes simplifying assumptions to assess the dynamic and thermal current carrying capacity of modular and toroidal field current bridges, including the fixing points on the WVII-AS experiment under worst case assumptions. On the basis of the assembly illustrated, evidence can be obtained of adequate resistance to short circuits and adequate thermal loading capacity for most parts of the current bridge system, up to short-circuiting currents of 210kA with a flat-top time of 0.7s. The level for which the supply system between power stations and the experiment is designed and the highest theoretically calculated short-circuiting current is 260kA, switched off by overcurrent devices within 0.01s. Under worst case assumptions the highest short-circuiting current which might actually be expected to appear at the input terminals of the experiment is 200-210kA, with a maximum duration of 0.5s. In the event of a short-circuit there will be local deformations of the current bridge and fixing parts in the shorted circuit. Local damage to the insulation cannot be excluded. After such an incident, not only must the actual fault locations be checked (at least visually) but also in particular the fixing, insulating and current bridge parts mentioned in the report must be checked before there is a full return to experimental operation.
