Abstract

Collective Thomson scattering from density fluctuations at the thermal level is used to measure the ion temperature of a tokamak plasma. The experiment installed at the TCA tokamak comprises a pulsed optically pumped D(2)O laser emitting at 385 microns and a heterodyne receiver with a Schottky barrier diode mixer. Measurements have been carried out in H, D, and He plasmas. At electron densities above 5 x 1.0 E19/m3 the signal-to-noise ratio is sufficient to obtain ion temperature measurements in a single laser shot with an estimated uncertainty of 20%. For the evaluation of the ion temperature from the spectrum of the scattered radiation, the contributions from impurity ions and the influence of the magnetic field are taken into account.
