Abstract

The aims of the fifteen benchmark exercises on vessel depressurisation were to compare experimental data with code calculations and to draw conclusions from experiments performed at the different test facilities. These exercises were analysed for both large and small vessels. Nozzles and long pipes were used as venting devices. The benchmark exercises highlighted two processes that occur during venting. In the first process a predominantly liquid discharge takes place when the vessel is nearly full. The second process is governed by primarily vapour discharge with higher depressurisation rates than in the first process. The predominance of either of these processes depends on the initial filling, the size of the vessel and the dimensions of the vent line. For the theoretical calculations of the benchmark exercises and to test the knowledge of the hydrodynamic phenomena occurring during venting, three different types of codes were employed. The benchmark exercises made it possible to identify the weak and strong points of the theoretical models. It is evident that the numerical codes should model the vessel with several control volumes in the axial direction in order to represent realistically the hydrodynamic processes of venting.
