OPTIMIZATION OF BIOMASS PRODUCTION IN SHORT-ROTATION EUCALYPTUS GLOBULUS PLANTATIONS
In order to evaluate the effects of the nutritional and moisture contents of soil in the productivity of Eucalyptus globulus stands in Portugal, four different treatment regimes were compared : the first (IF) supplied a complete nutrient solution weekly along with sufficient daily irrigation to maintain soil water content above 80% of field capacity, the second (F) consisted of pelleted fertilisers broadcast twice a year, the third (I) had the same daily irrigation as the first and the fourth (C) was a rain-fed, un-fertilised control. The main effect of the treatments was an increase in foliage. The proportion of stem to above ground biomass was maximum in the IF stands and higher in I than in F or C stands. The concentration of mineral nutrients in plant tissues increased only slightly with mineral fertilisation. Studies of genetic variability among populations showed no superior growth or cold tolerance in Australian compared with Portuguese provenances. Significant differences were found in cold damage in frost prone areas between Portuguese provenances from different parts of the country.
