UNDERGROUND DATA COMMUNICATIONS
The aim of the project was to design and test a data transmission system for mines, followed by a field trial to test the transmission of data to the surface under practical mine conditions. The project was divided into four phases: Phase 1, system design; Phase 2, laboratory system; Phase 3, a passive underground trial and Phase 4, the active underground trial. The major part of the project was devoted to developing the hardware and the support software. The final two phases were devoted to proving the operation of the data transmission system under practical conditions. Phase 3 passed artificially large volumes of data between a number of waystations. No examples of undetected erroneous messages were detected during this trial. The final phase added monitoring and control to the system. Although in the final analysis the cable lengths and traffic volumes were lower than had been hoped, the system proved to be well able to cope with the conditions under which it was asked to operate.
