Abstract

The coordinated project MIRAGE (Migration of Radionuclides in the Geosphere) was launched by the Commission of the European Communities in 1983. It puts together cost-sharing research contracts with organisations in Member States as components of the Community R&D programme on radioactive waste management and storage, as well as direct activities of the programme of the Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy. The objective of this project is the study of the transfer of radioactivity from conditioned waste through the different barriers up to the interface between the geosphere and biosphere. In order to supply relevant data and models to be used for safety assessments of geological disposal of radioactive waste, work concentrates on four major research areas: geochemistry of actinides and fission products in natural aquifer systems, migration experiments and development of measuring techniques, natural analogues and calculation tools. Specific reference sites (e.g. Mol, Gorleben, Fanay-Augeres, Drigg, El Berrocal) have been identified. The main thrust of the project is on in-situ investigations and the benchmarking of measurement techniques, concepts and computer codes.
