Abstract

Ultrasonic and magnetic investigations have been performed on a pressure vessel steel in order to study the influence of fatigue loading on the elastic and magnetic material properties. Using laboratory specimens under two different loading conditions (tension-tension loading, tension-compression loading), material characteristics (ultrasonic velocity, ultrasonic absorption, coercivity and incremental permeability) were measured and evaluated as a function of consumed lifetime. Only in the case of macroscopic plastic deformation were significant changes of the measuring quantities observed. Otherwise the effects were so small that the nondestructive detection of microstructural changes due to fatigue loading did not seem to be feasible under practical conditions (for example in pressure vessels) with the techniques used.
