SELF-CONSISTENT CALCULATIONS OF ICRH POWER DEPOSITION AND VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION
Propagation of the magnetosonic wave in tokamak plasmas is analysed for frequencies in the ion cyclotron range. The power deposition depends, among other things, on the velocity distribution of the resonating ions. Since the latter in its turn depends on the former both have to be calculated self-consistently. A method is presented to solve this problem during steady state by successive iterations. Simplifed models are used which include the effects of enhanced Doppler broadening caused by formation of an anisotropic tail on the velocity distribution and the enhanced absorption caused by the wave field component rotating opposite to the ions. For high temperature plasma with large power density, the latter correction becomes important for determining the partition of the power among different absorbing plasma species. The implications for various JET-heating scenarios are discussed.
