Abstract

The use of modern automated instruments has allowed the measurement of determinands at much lower levels and at high sample throughput. However, it has not led to more accurate results. Measurement quality can be improved within a laboratory by the use of a quality assurance (QA) manual and control charts, or between laboratories by proficiency testing by an independent organisation. The BCR offers two means of assistance in this: the production of certified reference materials for use within the laboratory and the organisation of intercomparisons between laboratories.
