Abstract

Human exposure to low levels of some toxic elements can be monitored by hair analysis. A certified reference material (CRM) helps to ascertain the accuracy of the determinations. The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) produced such a CRM certified for Cd, Hg, Pb, Se and Zn. The material was collected from people of various ages living in a moderately contaminated area. The homogeneity was established by INAA on the basis of more than ten trace and minor elements. In addition, a long term stability study was conducted on various trace elements. At least three different analytical methods were applied for each certified element. Each participating laboratory was requested to determine the elements in five-fold. Special attention was given to the traceability of results.
