Abstract

The main objective is to study abnormal behaviour in conditions close to runaway in batch reactors, in order to determine critical operating conditions and to develop methods to detect and control thermal excursions. The FIRES experimental facility consists of a chemical batch reactor equipped with sensitive measuring devices and provided with control, early-warning and shutdown systems. Attention is currently focussed on two chemical processes: the mononitration of toluene by mixed acid and the suspension polymerisation of methyl methacrylate. The mathematical simulator FISIM is used to simulate the dynamic behaviour of chemical processes carried out in an RC1 reaction calorimeter, taking account of thermo-kinetic phenomena occurring in the reaction mixture, the interaction with the equipment and the influence of operating conditions such as stirring.
